Lewes Historical Society Museum: Bringing History Within Reach
An engaging museum experience rooted in community, built for discovery.
For the Lewes Historical Society, preserving the past also meant finding new ways for people to connect with it. Steel City Displays partnered with the museum to design, fabricate, integrate, and install a permanent exhibition that brings the maritime and cultural heritage of Lewes, Delaware, to life.
The Vision
The museum wanted to modernize its exhibits and create a more hands-on learning experience. The goal was to give visitors opportunities to explore, participate, and connect with the people and stories that shaped the community.
Together, we set out to create an environment that honored the historical collection while inviting discovery across generations.
Our Approach
Guided by the Power of WE, our team worked closely with museum stakeholders to connect their historical expertise with our capabilities in exhibit design, custom fabrication, technology integration, and installation.
Radical Intentionality shaped the details: how artifacts were presented, how stories unfolded, and where visitors could participate. Custom display cases showcased historic clothing, a canoe, a rifle, and other artifacts, while recreated settings gave those objects a broader sense of place.
A lighthouse simulation, touchscreen tables, and multimedia displays introduced opportunities for active exploration. Recreated spaces, including a historic jail and post office, brought everyday life from the town’s past into the visitor experience.
The installation was built as a permanent environment with flexibility for future updates, artifact rotations, and refreshed experiences, allowing the museum’s storytelling to evolve.
The Experience
Visitors encounter Lewes’ history through objects, environments, and opportunities to participate. They can explore shipbuilding and lighthouse stories, examine historic artifacts, and step into settings that connect the collection to daily life in the 19th century.
Hands-on and digital experiences complement the artifacts, giving visitors different ways to engage with the material and follow their curiosity.
The completed exhibition brings history within reach, creating a place where the Lewes Historical Society can continue sharing its community’s story for years to come.
Built to perform, not just appear.
